Authorities have now charged that very attorney, Gregory Moore, with orchestrating her murder in a cold-blooded plot to derail her divorce proceedings.

A Chilling Crime in Broad Daylight

On March 24, 2013, 53-year-old Aliza Sherman was attacked and fatally stabbed near East 12th Street in downtown Cleveland. Surveillance footage captured a hooded assailant chasing her just steps from the Erieview Tower, where Moore's law firm was located.

That Sunday afternoon, Sherman had gone to meet Moore, her divorce lawyer, who had texted her earlier that day asking to meet at the office at 4:30 p.m. When she arrived, the doors were locked. She texted him, saying she’d wait in her car due to the cold weather. Minutes later, she was ambushed, stabbed more than 10 times, and left for dead.

Despite her severe injuries, Sherman managed to call 911 before collapsing. A passerby also called for help. She was transported to a nearby hospital but succumbed to her wounds.

The Investigation That Went Cold — Then Exploded Open

For years, the case baffled investigators. There were no eyewitnesses, and the killer's identity remained a mystery. Moore, though considered a person of interest, continued practicing law for several more years.

But on May 2, 2025, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley announced a stunning development: Gregory Moore, now 63, had been arrested in Austin, Texas by U.S. Marshals. He was indicted on multiple charges including:

  • One count of Aggravated Murder

  • One count of Conspiracy

  • Six counts of Murder

  • Two counts of Kidnapping

“This case represents a staggering betrayal of trust and a deliberate act of violence,” said O’Malley. “The Sherman family has waited over a decade for answers, and today we take the first step toward justice.”

A Calculated Plot to Stop a Divorce

Court documents reveal that Moore had allegedly planned the attack for months. According to the indictment, his motive was to obstruct Sherman’s divorce trial, which was scheduled for the week of March 25, 2013.

Moore is accused of devising a scheme to prevent Sherman from appearing in court — either by causing her serious harm or ensuring her death. Prosecutors allege he either committed the murder himself or enlisted a co-conspirator. His behavior that day was highly suspicious:

  • He used his key card to access the office building but never entered.

  • He disconnected his phone from the network to avoid location tracking.

  • After the stabbing, he entered the office via a back door, bypassing police at the front.

  • He began calling Sherman’s phone hours later in what prosecutors say was an attempt to feign ignorance.

Five days after the murder, Moore filed a motion informing the court of Sherman’s death. Just days later, her divorce case was dismissed — exactly as Moore intended, prosecutors allege.

A Pattern of Criminal Behavior

Moore’s legal history paints a disturbing picture. In 2012, he allegedly made bomb threats on three separate occasions to courthouses where he was scheduled to appear — a tactic prosecutors say was meant to delay trials. When his cellphone activity around the threats came under scrutiny, Moore reportedly switched phones and used his firm’s mobile hotspot to evade law enforcement detection.

Despite these allegations, he continued practicing law until he resigned his license in 2018 following unrelated misconduct charges.

Breakthrough with Digital Forensics

In 2021, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation reopened the Sherman case. Investigators utilized enhanced digital forensic tools to trace Moore’s actions and devices on the day of the murder. This new evidence, authorities say, finally linked Moore to the fatal attack.

What’s Next

Moore is currently in custody and is scheduled to be arraigned on May 16, 2025 in Cuyahoga County. As of now, no attorney has been listed as representing him.

The Sherman family has asked for privacy during this time. “This arrest brings some long-awaited peace,” said Aliza’s daughter in a brief statement. “We are grateful to law enforcement for never giving up.”

Remembering Aliza Sherman

Aliza Sherman was more than just a victim — she was a respected nurse at the Cleveland Clinic, a dedicated mother, and a kind soul deeply loved by her family, patients, and friends.
