Harry Moyer |
Age: 103
Date of birth: October 30, 1920
Service: USA Air Force
San Luis Obispo, California-based verification indicates that 103-year-old Harry Moyer (USA, born October 30, 1920) is the oldest pilot presently in the air.
Harry tries to keep himself busy. As much as he can, he plays golf, sees loved ones, and flies his plane.
Harry has been a pilot since 1942, with the exception of a small hiatus. He bought his first plane, a Mooney N6775U, in October 1965 with the help of a fraternity brother. He has flown 4,500 hours in Mooney aircraft since purchasing his own N6688N on April 1, 1976. It was business as usual for him to get ready for the flight on his 100th birthday.
Even though he has owned his Mooney MK21E N6688R for 40 years, he still aspires to fly at least once a week, weather permitting or when the aircraft needs maintenance. He was hoping to break records on his 100th birthday flight, according to his loved ones.
A Chinese delegation was present to witness Moyer's achievement; he is a veteran of World War II having joined the 14th Air Force's 23rd Fighter Group in China in 1944. The squadron's principal responsibility was to protect the Chinese airfield and the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers stationed there. The Flying Tigers became the team's official name.
