Black bear kills a man and dog |
The incident, confirmed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), marks the first documented fatal bear attack in the state's history.
Victim Identified
The victim has been identified as Robert Markel, a longtime resident of the Jerome area. According to FWC officials, Markel's daughter called 911 after witnessing a bear attacking the family dog. Upon investigating, she discovered her father's body nearby. The attacks occurred within a few hundred yards of each other but at different times.
Ongoing Search for the Bear
Authorities have deployed four live bear traps in the vicinity and are using drones to locate the animal. Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and avoid the area. FWC emphasizes that individuals should not approach or attempt to track wildlife.
Rising Bear Encounters in Florida
Florida's black bear population has rebounded in recent decades, leading to increased sightings, especially in rural and suburban areas. The FWC is considering measures to manage the growing bear population, including the possibility of resuming bear hunts, a practice not conducted in nearly a decade.
Safety Recommendations
The FWC advises the public to:
-
Secure garbage and food sources to prevent attracting bears.
-
Avoid direct encounters by making noise when in bear habitats.
-
If confronted, remain calm, speak assertively, and back away slowly.
-
Never run from a bear or play dead.
-
In the event of an attack, fight back using any available objects.
This incident underscores the importance of awareness and preparedness when living near or visiting areas inhabited by wildlife.
