Because of how patriarchal it was at the time, they thought it was absurd to celebrate fatherhood on a special day when mothers should have received more credit.

Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, is usually credited with creating the holiday. Her father, a Civil War veteran, reared her and her five siblings after their mother passed away during childbirth. According to legend, she got the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, which was starting to gain popularity as a holiday at the time.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910, Dodd's father's birthday, thanks to the support of the local religious authorities. U.S. President Calvin Coolidge supported the observance in 1924, and President Lyndon B. Johnson proclamated the day's recognition in 1966. When President Richard Nixon signed legislation declaring the third Sunday in June to be Father's Day in 1972, it became a national holiday. In most countries, Father's Day is observed on Sunday, June 20, 2021.

2002: Families mourned the fathers who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack.

Many of the nearly 3,000 men and women who died in the horrific 9/11 attacks were fathers. The next Father's Day was a more solemn event, with TV shows, periodicals, and newspapers paying tribute to the deceased.

2008: Senator Barack Obama gave a sermon about fatherhood.
