The Incident: A Routine Stop Turns Deadly
On January 7, 2023, Nichols was pulled over by officers from the Memphis Police Department's now-disbanded SCORPION unit for alleged reckless driving—a claim later found to be unsubstantiated.
Nichols fled on foot but was soon apprehended near his home. Body camera and surveillance footage revealed officers pepper-spraying, tasing, punching, kicking, and striking Nichols with a baton while he cried out for his mother. Despite his pleas, officers failed to render immediate medical aid. Nichols succumbed to his injuries three days later, with an autopsy citing blunt force trauma as the cause of death.
Legal Proceedings: State and Federal Charges
All five officers involved were fired and faced both state and federal charges. In the state trial, Bean, Haley, and Smith were charged with second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. After an 8½-hour deliberation, the jury acquitted them on all counts.
Separately, in federal court, Haley was convicted of violating Nichols' civil rights and other related offenses. Bean and Smith were found guilty of witness tampering. Two other officers, Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr., pleaded guilty to both state and federal charges and await sentencing.
