Terrorist Attack in New Orleans: Truck Crashes into Crowd, 10 Dead, 35 Injured

The police told ABC News that the driver seemed to have hit the crowd on purpose and has not yet been caught. Local authorities have asked the FBI for help, and a command center is being set up.
Governor Jeff Landry called it "a horrific act of violence" and said his family is praying for the victims and first responders.
The City of New Orleans described the event as a "mass casualty incident." The vehicle struck a large crowd on Canal and Bourbon streets around 3:15 a.m., according to WGNO, an ABC News affiliate.
"There are 30 injured patients that have been transported by NOEMS and 10 fatalities," the city said, referring to New Orleans Emergency Medical Services.
The injured were taken to five local hospitals: University Medical Center, Touro Hospital, East Jefferson General Hospital, Ochsner Medical Center Jefferson Campus, and Ochsner Baptist Campus.

The New Orleans Police Department was "staffed 100%" for New Year's Eve and the Sugar Bowl, a college football game held annually on New Year's Day. An additional 300 officers from partner agencies were also on duty.
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has released initial information on the attack that killed 10 people early on New Year’s Day. “We do know that the city of New Orleans was impacted by a terrorist attack,” Cantrell said, noting the incident is still under investigation. |
