As President Donald Trump pushes to strengthen U.S. auto manufacturing with a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and incentives like tax-deductible interest on loans for U.S.-made cars, the spotlight is once again on which cars are truly American. But the answer isn’t simple—because no car is 100% American-made.

In today's globalized supply chain, even cars assembled in the U.S. include components sourced internationally. However, some vehicles stand out for their high domestic content, local assembly, and contributions to American jobs. That’s where Cars.com's American-Made Index (AMI) comes in.

The 2025 AMI ranks vehicles based on five key factors:

  • Final assembly location

  • U.S. and Canadian parts content

  • Country of origin for engine and transmission

  • U.S. manufacturing workforce involved

And for the third year in a row, one brand dominates the list—Tesla.

Why These Cars Matter

In a political climate pushing for U.S. manufacturing and economic nationalism, buying an “American” car is more nuanced than ever. It's not just about the badge on the grille—it's about where the car is assembled, how much of it is made with U.S. parts, and how many Americans are involved in building it.

Cars.com’s index offers the most objective look into that equation. And while no vehicle is 100% U.S.-sourced, the cars on this list come the closest.
