China Debuts High-Speed Spherical Police Robot
Chinese researchers develop amphibious spherical robot assisting in police patrol

China is pushing further into high-tech policing with the introduction of a spherical patrol robot designed to assist law enforcement officers in urban security operations. Recently demonstrated by a Chinese special police officer, the unusual ball-shaped machine has attracted global attention for its futuristic design and advanced capabilities.

Developed by Chinese robotics engineers, the spherical police robot is intended to support patrol missions, crowd control, and suspect tracking in busy city environments. Unlike traditional wheeled robots, this device moves by rolling across the ground like a large armored ball, allowing it to remain stable even after collisions or sudden impacts.

According to developers and local media reports, the robot weighs roughly 125 kilograms and can reach speeds of up to 35 kilometers per hour, making it capable of quickly pursuing suspects. Its reinforced spherical shell can withstand heavy impacts and harsh outdoor conditions, protecting the sensitive electronics and sensors inside.

The robot is equipped with a range of technologies designed for modern policing. These include high-resolution cameras, artificial intelligence software, and facial recognition systems that allow it to identify suspicious individuals or monitor crowds in real time. Police operators can control the machine remotely or allow it to perform certain patrol functions autonomously.

In addition to surveillance features, the spherical robot can also carry non-lethal law-enforcement tools. Depending on the configuration, it may deploy devices such as tear gas spray, net launchers, loudspeakers for warnings, and other crowd-control equipment. These tools allow officers to manage potentially dangerous situations while minimizing direct confrontation.

One of the robot’s most notable design advantages is its sealed spherical body, which enables it to operate in difficult terrain and even move through shallow water. This capability expands its potential use in environments such as waterfronts, parks, or flood-prone urban areas.

Chinese authorities have not announced a nationwide deployment yet, but the technology is reportedly undergoing trial use in several cities, including areas in Zhejiang province. The tests aim to evaluate how robotic systems can improve patrol efficiency and enhance public-safety responses.

The spherical robot represents part of a broader trend toward AI-powered “smart policing” technologies in China. As cities explore new ways to manage security in crowded public spaces, robotic patrol units like this one may soon become a familiar sight on urban streets.
