What are the Types of UK Universities?
If you want to study in the UK, you should know that there are some types of universities.
Ancient universities: These medieval and Renaissance universities, founded between 1096 and 1582, still exist today! Lecture halls and corridors in these universities are often centuries old. Due to their history, they still offer tutorials in addition to lectures to help students connect with faculty in smaller groups.
The Red brick or civic universities: To meet the growing demand for university-level study in science, design, technology, and engineering, these universities were founded in major industrial cities during World War I. These non-collegiate schools taught “real-world” skills to students of any religion or background. The location of these universities in the middle of cities on undefined campuses is their most appealing feature.
Plate glass universities or 1960s universities: The Robbins Report on Higher Education (1963) recommended these universities be established between 1963 and 1992 as part of UK education reforms to increase university numbers. Enlightened universities took new approaches to syllabus, examination, administration, teaching methods, and discipline. These are called Plate Glass group because of their architectural style and the fact that most are built on green-field sites like US-style campuses.
New universities or Polytechnic and metropolitan universities: These universities evolved from Polytechnics, Further Education Colleges, Teacher Training Colleges, University Colleges, and other higher education institutions during the 1980s and 1990s education reforms. Despite their recent university status, their education roots are deep. These fast-growing universities compete with older ones for new facilities and a modern outlook.
Russell Group universities: The Russell Group, a group of 24 top British research universities, is often compared to the Ivy League. Two-thirds of government research grant funding goes to the group, whose universities are considered the best in the UK.
