The accident happened at 9:07 a.m. when the Jeju Air flight was landing at the Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, about 288 kilometers away from Seoul, the officials said.

The plane, with some 175 passengers and six crew members aboard, was returning from Bangkok.

Authorities were conducting an investigation on the site to determine the exact cause of the crash and rescue operations were also under way, the officials said.

An aircraft drove off the runway and crashed at Muan International Airport in South Korea, with 62 casualties confirmed, the Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday.

The Jeju Air plane, which was carrying 175 passengers and six flight attendants, was flying back from Thailand and the accident took place while it was landing, the report said. The airport is in southern South Korea.

South Korea's emergency office said the fire has been put out and rescue officials are trying to remove the remaining passengers from the Jeju Air plane. The office said the aircraft had around 180 people on board and was returning from Bangkok. The incident happened due to malfunctioning landing gear which caused the plane to veer off the runway and crash into a fence.
