Earthquake strikes Mississippi as tornadoes tear through state |
A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck Magee, Mississippi, on Saturday, the same day a tornado outbreak tore through multiple Southern states, leaving at least 20 people dead, dozens injured, and thousands displaced. The rare combination of seismic activity and violent storms has left residents reeling as emergency crews scramble to assess the damage and provide aid.
A Rare Earthquake Amid Chaos
At 1:49 p.m. CST, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 3.0-magnitude earthquake six miles northeast of Magee, Mississippi, at a depth of 10.5 kilometers. While considered minor, the quake rattled nerves in a region already facing one of the worst tornado outbreaks in recent history.
Magee resident Sarah Thompson described the moment:
"I was sheltering in my hallway because of the tornado warning when I felt the ground shake. I thought it was just strong winds, but then I realized my furniture was shifting. It was surreal."
Although no major damage from the earthquake was reported, experts warn that aftershocks could occur, adding to the already dire situation in the region.

Tornadoes Rip Through Mississippi and Neighboring States
While the earthquake itself caused minimal impact, the same could not be said for the powerful tornadoes that swept through Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee.
Mississippi Takes a Direct Hit
Mississippi bore the brunt of the storms, with at least six confirmed fatalities in multiple counties:
- Walthall County: Three people died in Tylertown as a tornado leveled homes and uprooted trees.
- Jefferson Davis County: Two fatalities and widespread destruction were reported.
- Covington County: One confirmed death, with emergency crews still searching through debris.
The town of Taylorsville suffered significant damage, including destruction to schools, homes, and businesses.
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency, mobilizing the National Guard and first responders to affected areas.
"This is one of the worst weather disasters we've faced in recent years," Reeves said in a statement.
Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee Also Devastated
The severe weather system extended beyond Mississippi, hitting Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee with deadly force:
- Missouri: At least 14 people were killed, and a mobile home park was nearly wiped out.
- Arkansas: Three confirmed deaths and 29 injuries across multiple counties.
- Tennessee: Multiple injuries and heavy structural damage.
In Texas, high winds caused dust storms and fatal car crashes, including a 38-car pileup.
Storm System Expected to Continue
The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that the danger isn't over. More severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are possible in Alabama, Mississippi, and Tennessee, with high-risk conditions persisting through Sunday.
The Storm Prediction Center reported a 30% chance of additional tornadoes, urging residents to stay vigilant and have emergency plans in place.
Emergency Response and Recovery Efforts
First responders, FEMA, and local emergency crews have begun search and rescue operations, but many areas remain inaccessible due to debris-covered roads and downed power lines.
Over 300,000 homes and businesses across multiple states are without power, and emergency shelters are filling up rapidly.
The American Red Cross and other relief organizations are deploying resources to affected communities. Those wishing to help can donate through official disaster relief funds.
A Historic Weather Event
Experts say the combination of a tornado outbreak and an earthquake on the same day is highly unusual.
Dr. Mark Spencer, a meteorologist with NOAA, explains:
"Tornadoes and earthquakes operate on completely different geological principles, but their overlap in this case is an unfortunate coincidence that makes the disaster response even more challenging."
As communities begin to pick up the pieces, the focus will be on rescue, recovery, and rebuilding. For now, Magee and the surrounding regions remain in crisis mode, bracing for what could be another turbulent night.
