Who was Leroy Ramos? Shooting death of MARTA bus driver, Teenagers Arrested
Three teenagers connected to the deadly shooting of a bus driver in Georgia are now in custody, police said.
Family, friends, and union workers held a balloon release to honor Ramos, who leaves behind a wife and three children; an online fundraiser has been started to assist with funeral costs. |
Leroy Ramos, a 47-year-old bus driver, was shot several times on Friday night after a dispute about paying the $2.50 fare, according to a MARTA statement.
The shooting happened around 6:30 p.m. at a bus station in Decatur, a city about six miles east of Atlanta.
Two of the teens, whose names were not released because of their age, were arrested that same evening.
All three teens are now facing murder charges and will be tried as adults.
"MARTA is heartbroken over the loss of bus operator Leroy Ramos, a new team member and ATU member who had already made a positive impression on his colleagues," a MARTA spokesperson said in a statement.
The statement added, "MARTA has strict rules to prevent violence, which include operators avoiding conflicts with passengers and leaving rule enforcement to MARTA Police."
According to Fox 5, Ramos recently started working for MARTA in October. He is survived by his wife and three children. A GoFundMe created for the family has raised over $10,000.
The two juveniles arrested earlier have been charged with aggravated assault and murder; their case has been moved to DeKalb County Superior Court for further proceedings. The shooting occurred after a dispute over a $2.50 bus fare, resulting in Ramos being shot three times and dying from his injuries. Community members and organizations are urging the third suspect to surrender and are advocating for efforts to reduce gun violence among youth. |
