Investigators have uncovered a potentially critical piece of evidence in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of television journalist Savannah Guthrie, as authorities widen their search across southern Arizona.

A black glove was discovered roughly 1.5 miles from Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson, according to officials familiar with the investigation. The glove closely resembles one worn by a masked individual captured on newly released surveillance footage from the morning of her disappearance.

The footage, made public earlier this week by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pima County Sheriff's Office, shows a person dressed in dark clothing approaching Guthrie’s front entrance shortly before dawn on February 1. The individual appears to tamper with or disable the home’s doorbell camera before leaving the frame.

Forensic Testing Underway

Law enforcement sources say the glove has been sent for expedited forensic testing, including DNA analysis and trace evidence examination. Investigators are working to determine whether it matches the gloves seen in the surveillance video and whether it contains biological material that could identify a suspect.

Officials have not confirmed whether fingerprints were recovered. However, authorities described the find as “significant” because it represents the first publicly disclosed physical evidence discovered away from the residence.

Earlier in the investigation, authorities confirmed that blood found inside the home matched Guthrie, reinforcing their belief she was taken by force.

Expanding Search Area

Search teams have since expanded ground operations across desert terrain and nearby roadways in Arizona, focusing on routes leading away from the Foothills community. Air support and cadaver dogs have also been deployed.

The FBI has reported receiving thousands of public tips since releasing the surveillance images. Officials say they are reviewing each submission and following up on leads that align with the timeline established through digital evidence and neighborhood camera systems.

Ransom Messages and Persons of Interest

The investigation has grown more complex following several reported ransom communications sent to media outlets and law enforcement. Authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of those messages or whether they are directly connected to the abduction.

One individual was briefly detained for questioning during a traffic stop south of Tucson but was released without charges. Officials stressed that the person was only considered a person of interest and that the investigation remains active.

Family Appeals for Information

Savannah Guthrie, co-host of NBC’s Today, has issued emotional public appeals urging anyone with information to contact authorities. Family members have emphasized that Nancy Guthrie requires daily medication, raising concerns about her health as the search enters its second week.

Law enforcement agencies continue to urge residents in the Catalina Foothills area to review security footage recorded between midnight and 6 a.m. on February 1.

As forensic testing on the glove proceeds, investigators say they remain committed to identifying the masked individual captured on video and locating Nancy Guthrie.
