Police Confirm: This Was Not a Random Shooting
During a press conference outside the mall, Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo provided critical insight into the nature of the attack.
“This was not a random act of violence,” Spagnolo said. “We have reason to believe that the suspect and the victims knew each other and that the shooting stemmed from an interpersonal dispute that escalated quickly.”
The suspect, believed to have used a semiautomatic handgun, fled the scene before officers could apprehend him. Surveillance footage is currently under review, and multiple leads are being pursued.
Security Measures and Public Safety Response
Although no arrests have been made as of this writing, law enforcement has taken steps to reassure the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
“We want residents and shoppers to know that this was an isolated incident,” Spagnolo emphasized. “There is no reason to believe the general public is at risk.”
Increased patrols have been deployed around the mall and other high-traffic areas in Waterbury. Mall management is cooperating fully with investigators and has temporarily increased on-site security presence.
The mall reopened Wednesday morning under heightened security. Several retailers, however, chose to remain closed out of caution and to give staff time to recover.
Investigation Ongoing: Public Urged to Share Information
Detectives are continuing to gather evidence, including security footage and eyewitness accounts. Authorities are urging anyone who was in the mall at the time of the incident to come forward with any relevant information, photos, or videos.
