Anthony and Justin Mitchell: A Father’s Unwavering Love
Anthony Mitchell, 67, and his son Justin, who had cerebral palsy, perished in their Altadena home as flames closed in. Anthony, a retired salesman and amputee, was confined to a wheelchair but remained steadfast in protecting his son. His daughter, Hajime White, recalls his final words:
"Baby, I’m just letting you know the fire’s broke out, and we’re going to have to evacuate. I’ve got to go — the fire’s in the yard."
When authorities discovered their bodies, Anthony was by Justin’s bed, a testament to his devotion. For Hajime, the loss is overwhelming: “He was not going to leave his son behind. No matter what.” Anthony’s legacy is one of love and sacrifice, cherished by his four children, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Rodney Nickerson: A Lifetime in One Home
Eighty-three-year-old Rodney Nickerson spent his last moments in the home he purchased in 1968. Despite pleas from his daughter, Kimiko, and neighbors, Rodney refused to leave, reassuring them with his final words:
"I’ll be here tomorrow."
The next day, his body was found intact in his bed, a heartbreaking end to a life filled with cherished memories within those walls. “We found his bones, his whole body was intact,” Kimiko shared, reflecting the haunting permanence of her father’s decision. His stubborn resolve to remain in the place he called home ultimately cost him his life.
Victor Shaw: A Last Stand for Family History
Victor Shaw was killed in the blaze while trying to save the home that has been in his family for 55 years |
Victor Shaw, 66, met his end clutching a garden hose in a desperate attempt to save the Montrose Avenue home his family had cherished for 55 years. Despite warnings from his sister, Shari, Victor stayed behind, determined to fight the flames. “When I yelled out his name, he didn’t reply, and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm,” Shari recalled.
Victor’s body was found the next day, still holding the hose, a tragic symbol of his love for his family’s legacy. Family friend Al Tanner described the scene: “It looks like he was trying to save the home that his parents had for almost 55 years.” Shari’s grief is palpable: “I fell to the ground... they told me he looked serene, as if he was at peace.”
An Unidentified Victim in Malibu
On Thursday, Malibu officials confirmed the sixth fatality linked to the raging wildfires, marking the first casualty from the Palisades Fire.
The remains were discovered in a Malibu residence late Wednesday night after authorities conducted a welfare check prompted by a missing persons report.
“This tragic news weighs heavily on our hearts,” stated Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart. “Although the individual has not yet been identified, on behalf of the City of Malibu, I extend my deepest condolences to the loved ones of this person. Our community stands with you in this moment of unimaginable loss.”
Later that day, officials announced a seventh victim, also claimed by the relentless Palisades Fire.
A Region in FlamesThe fires have devastated entire communities, leaving over 10,000 homes and businesses destroyed. The Palisades Fire, scorching over 17,200 acres, and the Eaton Fire, with 13,690 acres consumed, have displaced nearly 180,000 residents, with another 200,000 facing evacuation warnings. Amidst the chaos, stories of bravery emerge, but the toll is staggering. |
The Unseen Toll
These stories reflect only a fraction of the heartbreak. Ten individuals lost their lives, including those yet to be identified. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department expects the death toll to rise as search teams sift through the wreckage. Sheriff Robert Luna expressed the community’s collective grief:
"These are not just numbers. These are people who had families, dreams, and lives."
Adding to the tragedy, looters have exploited the devastation, preying on those who have lost everything. Luna promised justice: “If you are in one of these areas where you do not belong, you are going to be arrested.”
A Call to Remember
The stories of Anthony and Justin Mitchell, Rodney Nickerson, Victor Shaw, and the other unnamed victims remind us of the human cost of these fires. Their lives were intertwined with the homes they fought to protect and the families they loved. As Los Angeles County begins the long road to recovery, these lives must be remembered not as statistics but as enduring symbols of courage and love in the face of unimaginable loss.
