The shooter, identified by police as Natalie Rupnow, who also went by Samantha, was a student at the Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, the state capital.
"Identifying a motive is our top priority, but at this time it appears that the motive was a combination of factors," Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes told a press conference.
Police are looking into the Rupnow's online activity, Barnes said. He urged anyone who knew her or had insights into her feelings to call Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014.
Rupnow's parents are cooperating with the investigation, Barnes told ABC News on Tuesday.
The Facebook Photos: A Chilling Glimpse into Natalie’s Activities
One of the key revelations comes from a photo posted by Natalie Rupnow’s father, Jeff Rupnow, on Facebook. Taken in August 2024, the image shows Natalie at a shooting range wearing a black T-shirt featuring the logo of KMFDM, a German industrial band whose music and imagery were associated with Columbine shooter Eric Harris.
In the photo, Natalie is seen aiming a firearm—reportedly a handgun—at a clay target, indicating that she had been engaged in shooting practice under her father’s supervision. In the comments accompanying the post, Jeff described their shared experience at the North Bristol Sportsman’s Club (NBSC), a gun club located in Sun Prairie, a suburb near Madison. Jeff wrote:
“We joined NBSC this spring, and we have been loving every second of it!”
The NBSC offers shooting lessons and family memberships, attracting individuals and families interested in recreational shooting. While it is common for families to practice at gun clubs, the post has now taken on a darker context in light of Monday’s tragedy. Investigators are examining whether Natalie’s training at the shooting range contributed to her familiarity with firearms and her ability to carry out the attack.
