| James Gracey, a University of Alabama student, has been reported missing in Spain after not returning from a night out |
James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student from Elmhurst, Illinois, was found dead on March 19 in waters off Barcelona’s coastline, following a days-long search involving police divers, drones, and maritime units.
Discovery Near Nightlife District
According to Catalan police, Gracey’s body was located in the Mediterranean Sea near Port Olímpic, close to the Shôko nightclub where he was last seen in the early hours of March 17.
Investigators said the body was found in relatively shallow water, roughly 13 feet deep, in an area heavily frequented by tourists and nightlife crowds.
Gracey had been visiting friends studying abroad and was on a spring break trip when he disappeared. Surveillance footage showed him leaving the nightclub around 3 a.m., after becoming separated from his group.
He never returned to the Airbnb where he was staying, prompting friends to report him missing hours later.
No Evidence of Foul Play
While the circumstances initially raised concerns about possible criminal involvement, authorities now say there is no indication of foul play.
“Everything points to it being an accident, not a criminal act,” a police spokesperson said after the body was identified.
Investigators are continuing to examine the exact cause of death, but early findings suggest Gracey may have entered the water near the nightclub area sometime after he was last seen.
Family and Community in Mourning
Gracey’s family, who had traveled to Spain to assist in the search, released a statement expressing grief and gratitude for the global support they received.
They described him as a deeply loved son, brother, and friend, and asked for privacy as they process the loss.
At the University of Alabama, students and faculty are mourning his death. Gracey was an honors accounting student and an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity, where he held leadership roles and was known for mentoring others.
University officials said the campus community is “heartbroken” and that support services are being made available to students affected by the tragedy.
Who was James Gracey?
James “Jimmy” Paul Gracey, a 20-year-old junior from Elmhurst, Illinois, was reported missing after a night out in Barcelona during a spring break trip. He had been visiting friends studying abroad when he vanished in the early hours of March 17.
According to his family, Gracey was last seen around 3 a.m. at Shôko, a popular beachfront nightclub in the city’s Port Olímpic area. His friends reportedly left the venue earlier, but Gracey chose to stay behind. He never returned to the Airbnb where he was staying.
A Key Detail Raises Questions
One of the most puzzling developments in the case is that Spanish police now have Gracey’s phone. His mother, Therese Gracey, shared this detail in a public appeal for help, but neither she nor authorities have explained how the device came into police possession.
That uncertainty has only deepened concerns.
Investigators have not said whether the phone was found near the nightclub, recovered elsewhere, or turned in by someone. They also have not disclosed whether it contains any clues about Gracey’s final movements.
Family’s Urgent Plea
Gracey’s mother has taken to social media to spread awareness and ask for information, describing her son in detail in hopes someone might recognize him.
He is about 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighs roughly 175 pounds, and was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants—likely joggers—and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.
“He didn’t make it back to the Airbnb,” she wrote. “Has anyone seen him?”
Friends, fellow students, and members of the study-abroad community in Barcelona have been sharing his photo widely, trying to generate leads.

Investigation Underway in Barcelona
Local authorities have opened an investigation into Gracey’s disappearance. Police confirmed they received a report shortly after he was last seen and are treating the case as an active missing persons inquiry.
So far, officials have released few details about the direction of the investigation or whether foul play is suspected.
The area where Gracey was last seen—near Barceloneta Beach—is a busy nightlife district, especially during spring break, which could complicate efforts to trace his movements.
University Responds
The University of Alabama confirmed that Gracey was traveling independently at the time of his disappearance but said it is supporting his family.
“UA staff are in touch with the family and those associated with them to offer support and assistance in any way possible,” the university said in a statement.
Gracey is described as an honors accounting student and an active member of the Theta Chi fraternity, where he served in a leadership role.
Growing Concern and International Attention
As hours turn into days, concern continues to grow both in the United States and abroad. Students in Barcelona, along with Gracey’s fraternity brothers and family, are urging anyone with information to come forward.
Some have also called for increased involvement from U.S. officials to support search efforts on the ground.
For now, the biggest unanswered question remains: how police obtained Gracey’s phone—and whether it holds the key to finding him.
